It is no secret that Mira Loma is far from perfect in racial equality. Many of us have heard stories of students brushed off by admin, offended by peers, or silently suffering from discrimnation. Along with struggles in school, the mental toll of all the disheartening bad news constantly bombarding us (especially related to BLM) has left many of us exhausted with the state of our underrepresented communities. These problems are not going unheard- and the student government has launched a new initiative to help.
SCORE, or the Student Committee on Racial Equality, is the newest project taken on by the student government. This committee is not a club, meaning it is not just an optional group of students working within themselves; it is a school wide initiative whose goal is to have everyone become a member.
SCORE serves as an inclusive community at Mira Loma High School with the goal to improve relations between racial and ethnic groups on campus through activities which educate about the importance of equality, cultural awareness, and social justice for the Associative Student Body.

This means that there will be no officers, just students and supporting teachers. They will also be working with Improve Your Tomorrow and the Black Student Union, to address their unique point of view as racially defined groups on campus. Leyu Hailu, a founding member of this committee who is also a member of BSU says “Black Student Union is more than happy to take part in [SCORE] and provide a safe space for Mira Loma students. BSU takes great pride in providing a great place for Black students to discuss issues at Mira Loma and also provide a safe and nurturing space for non-black students to learn about black culture and issues.”
Some of the plans SCORE has for meeting are having seminars, guest speakers, volunteering and fundraising with Racial Nonprofits, advocating for students and staff in events of racial discrimination, supporting students, and becoming a place of education and inclusion. Hailu also commented “I envision a future for SCORE where it will help the tension between racial differences at Mira Loma, create a safe space where people can come and discuss their issues and I feel like given the current climate it’s important to have this out at Mira Loma.” In order to ensure who has committed to be a member and uphold the mission statement, SCORE plans to create a membership card where one would sign a contract pledging to “treat people of all races, ethnicities, religions and more with respect and kindness… make every effort to learn about other cultures in order to never be offensive or hurtful… never use any harmful slur against another person and am committed to fostering the culture of inclusivity and equality at Mira Loma.” Overall, the is to promote racial respect and tolerance.
The student body’s response to the initiative is yet to be seen, and its future success is up to speculation. Only time will tell how well it becomes part of Mira Loma’s culture, but it is important to commend the students and teachers who took the initiative to try and change our school for the better.
