On Thursday, April 10th, 2025, Mira Loma High hosted a mental health event in the school quad that lasted for most of the school day. This event has been held at our school for several years, including last year. The purpose of this event was to aid students struggling with their mental health and to overall help everyone relax. Mental health is one of the main problems that teenagers face today, and I feel that this event really helped to recognize this and provide a solution to it.
At this event, there were many different stands, each with a different activity or attraction. Some of these included a stand where students could anonymously share something they feel insecure about on a sticky note, a stand where students could talk to other students to communicate anything they caused them worry, a stand where students could write down something they are stressed about and crush it in a soda can, and even a stand where students could create their own aquariums with markers and slime. Notably, there was also a real pony at the event that students could pet, comb, and interact with to help them de-stress. Additionally, several dogs were brought in for students to play with to promote psychological well-being.
Apart from the attractions, some stands gave students various different items that would help relieve them of stress. Some of these included stress balls made of flour and rubber balloons, small containers of slime, various types of fidget toys, and most common at this event, candy.
Many Mira Loma High School students and clubs contributed to the planning and implementation of this event, including Key Club, Erika’s Lighthouse, and Eunoia. Without their extensive involvement in creating it, it would not have been nearly as successful as it actually was. In fact, many Mira Loma High School students thought that this was a very beneficial event.
One junior at Mira Loma High School, Gianna Sampath, shares that “Mental Health Day was a much-needed break—a chance to slow down and just be human for a bit.” She believes that the best part about the event was the animals, specifically the pony and the dogs that were brought into our school.
Another junior at Mira Loma High School, Krish Ambalam-Jagadish, shares, “My favorite part about Mental Health Day was seeing clubs create different ways to tackle mental health challenges. Specifically, I enjoyed Eunoia’s Crush the Can and Neurobiology’s handheld aquarium. These interactive activities could prove to be vital with the IB exams approaching.”
Overall, Mental Health Day at Mira Loma was an experience that I believe is very unique to our school. It helped raise awareness about the importance of the preservation of mental health, especially in teenagers and high school students, and gave students who were lucky enough to attend it the opportunity to escape daily stressors and just relax, even if just for a little while.
