After school has been in session for around a month, Mira Loma’s homecoming season has now begun. With the season comes many homecoming related activities and events like float building, the football game, and flower parties.
Every year, each grade level at Mira Loma has a tradition of building a float related to a larger overall theme. The floats are displayed during homecoming. Teachers and faculty also vote on who they believe the best and most creative float is between the classes. The overall theme for this year’s homecoming is “A Legendary Hoco” and relates to mythology.
Here are the more specific themes that each class has chosen for their floats:
- Seniors: Medusa
- Juniors: Kraken
- Sophomores: Underworld
- Freshmen: Pandora’s Box
The floats are typically made of chicken wire and tissue paper flowers, which each class hosts flower parties for creating. The flower parties and float building will start this week and carry all the way over to homecoming week.
There will also be a float building event that will take place after school on Thursday, October 17th, after school from 3:30 to 11:00. It is important to understand that you cannot leave the event after 6:00 PM that day. There will also be a food truck at the event from Chando’s Tacos, so you will be able to purchase food there in case you get hungry.
The forms for permission for the float building night are currently in room C6, Mr. Posner’s room, and are due by October 15th in his room. Make sure to complete both the front side and the back side of the form.
The homecoming football game will take place at Del Campo High School, 4925 Dewey Drive, Fair Oaks, on October 18th from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM. Our football team will be playing against Oakmont High School. The theme for the homecoming football game will be “blackout”, so make sure to wear black clothing at the game! The homecoming floats that each class has made will also be displayed at the homecoming game, so make sure to come and check those out.
The homecoming dance, which always takes place the night following the football game, will take place on the evening of October 19th. Students from all grades are welcome to attend the dance. It will take place from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM.
The tickets for the dance are on sale now. This week, the week of October 7th, the tickets will be on sale for $25, but if you are an ASB card holder, the tickets this week are only $20. For next week, the week of October 14th, the tickets will increase in price and will be on sale for $30, unless you are an ASB card holder, in which case they will cost $25. When you buy your tickets, you will also be able to vote for who you think should be homecoming royalty.
During the week of homecoming, there will also be a spirit week. The Monday of homecoming week, October 14th, the theme will be crazy hair, so come to school with a wild hairstyle. The theme for Tuesday, October 15th, will be beach day, so wear beach-related attire. Wednesday, October 16th, will be triplet day, so come to school with matching clothes in a group of 3. Pajama day will be on Thursday, October 17th, so wear your pajamas to school. Finally, Friday, October 18th, will be blackout day to match the theme of the football game.
