On Saturday, September 27, 2025, Mira Loma Alumni and Friends hosted Mira Loma’s 65th Anniversary, celebrating 65 years of the Mighty Matador! During this event, many Mira Loma Alumni, students, and faculty from various graduation years joined together to celebrate this exceptional achievement, along with several student-run organizations and classes.
Mira Loma High School was established on July 1, 1960 as part of the San Juan Unified School District in Sacramento, California, welcoming thousands of students yearly. Mira Loma is also known for its International Baccalaureate (IB) Program, where it has been an IB World School since 1989, making it the largest IB school in Northern California. The school is also recognized for its high academic achievements in all academic courses and is ranked among the best high schools according to the U.S. News & World Report (It’s also ranked #4 by Niche.com in best high schools for the STEM area).
With all the academic achievements, success stories, and memories made at Mira Loma High School since 1960, the 65th anniversary of Mira Loma served as a commemorative event recalling the nostalgia and beauty of the school that so many loved throughout their years attending.
The 65th Anniversary of Mira Loma also highlighted various organizations, clubs, and classes, like the Mira Loma Band, conducted by Ms. Sonia Takanikos, Mr. John Cargile, and Ms. Tanya Vasquez. The band played nostalgic hits like Sweet Caroline, Havana, but most importantly, the Mira Loma Fight Song and the Alma Mater! The band wasn’t the only class that highlighted the event. Club attendances like the Chinese Culture Club, Dance Team, and B-Sharps also amused the guests with their wonderful performances.
Additionally, the 65th Anniversary highlighted the diversity and interconnectedness that have always been tied to the Matador identity since 1960. One alumnus from the class of 1975 told ML Today that they’ve long awaited this event to reunite with many. They also told us that Mira Loma looked very different from what we see today. The alumni recalled the intricate details that were once present at Mira Loma, like the former big lockers located in the hallway or the driver’s education course that was once where at the student parking lot. By listening to their recall of memories about Mira Loma, we were able to learn about the evolution of Mira Loma over time.
Overall, Mira Loma’s 65th Anniversary was a day to remember for all generations of Matadors!
