Mira Loma Today contacted candidates from each class to better understand their platforms. We asked them 4 questions.

  1. Why are you running for this specific position?
  2. What previous leadership experience do you have?
  3. What are some changes you plant to make or new ideas that you have?
  4. How do you plan on adapting to the restrictions faced with online school in relation to school spirit and events?

President

Leina Alofa Aders

Why are you running for this specific position?

I am running for this position because I have wanted to be a bigger part of the community for a very long time. I’ve looked forward to going to Mira Loma for ages and I want to leave my mark on the community we have here. I feel as freshman class president I can make a visible difference in the school environment, making it a healthier place for all students, no matter their background. Class president seems to be one of the biggest leadership involved roles, which is something I’m looking forward to.

What previous leadership experience do you have?

Over the summer I took part in Matador Leadership Academy, which is a Mira Loma run program for students to participate in to learn valuable skills. From this I learned important qualities in a leader, as well as how to lead effectively. Along with this I have been doing both speech and debate for over a year, which are both team sports. These clubs have given me collaborative skills I will forever be thankful for. This will be my first year in leadership, but I am not unfamiliar with the tasks. I have multiple friends as well as a brother who has walked me through what needs to get done, and I have helped them through their struggles in leadership as they share their experience with me.

What are some changes you plan to make or new ideas that you have?

I plan to amplify the voices of the students. I feel many candidates say this but I cannot say I have seen visible changes from them, while I plan to stick to my word. As a part of this, I want teachers and staff to listen to what the students have to say rather than brushing off serious concerns. Many people feel they are ignored and not taken seriously by adults, and I plan to act on that. School needs to be made a safer place, and the students need to feel it too because no matter how many times teachers say it is okay to not be okay, the students do not feel it. I want to make mental health a much higher priority, as I feel it is ignored within the school environment and only talked about on special occasions. Distance learning combined with intense classes has also worsened the mental health of many students during this time and I feel that deserves much more attention. My peers also tend to feel separated because of programs, IB, IS, etc., but I want to connect the students. Giving them opportunities to connect with kids outside of their classes is a valuable social skill that will certainly help them later in life.

How do you plan on adapting to the restrictions faced with online school in relation to school spirit and events?

I’m hoping to be able to continue to hold things like rallies at school, because there are less people meaning more of them can participate in the games and get involved. I would also love to host game zooms and things like that for those continuing to do distance learning. I feel that interacting with others at school is a really big part of the high school experience, and even under current conditions I want the students to get as involved as possible. Spirit days can also be hosted online, by showing up to your zoom in a special outfit or posting your spiritwear on your story and tagging student government. There are many ways to keep up the hopes of the students and I plan to do as many as possible.

Ana Banerjee

Why are you running for this specific position?

I want to be an officer in order to help my class as much as possible. These times are extremely stressful for many people. With the coronavirus, distance learning, and political unrest situations, many students are looking for guidance. As class president, helping my class navigate these times would be my top priority. My goal is to make the transition to high school and ultimately in person learning as smooth as possible. I hope to make this year the best it can be. Additionally, I would like to become more involved in Mira Loma as a school, and this is a great opportunity to do so. Overall, my want to be an officer is fueled by my want to help my peers in this unprecedented time, especially as freshmen, since we are new to the school.

What previous leadership experience do you have?

I have gained some valuable leadership experience, including middle school student leadership and high school FBLA. In middle school, I was elected as the Activities Commissioner, where I planned various rallies, dances, and festivals. This experience taught me how to be a good representative for the school, as it helped me realize how important it is to provide the students with an accurate voice. I also learned how to manage a team/committee. As FBLA’s Public Relations officer, I have gained insight on how to manage time and balancing various projects. This has also furthered my understanding of how crucial informing members of a group of things is. I am confident that this leadership experience will make me the best candidate for freshmen class president.

What are some changes you plan to make or new ideas that you have?

I have various ideas to implement this year. I know many students look forward to events that typically occur throughout the school year. I would like to translate those events into virtual events. Additionally, as freshmen, getting to know our peers, teachers, and school in general has been difficult online. If elected, I would prioritize helping students connect with one another, as well as providing resources for students to become acquainted with how the school runs. As president, it is vital to represent your class accurately and provide a chance for every student’s voice to be heard. As such, I would listen to all ideas and work with that individual and others to get the ideas polished and implemented.

How do you plan on adapting to the restrictions faced with online school in relation to school spirit and events?

I plan to adapt by implementing some of the ideas detailed in the previous question. The current pandemic has drastically changed what school looks like in its entirety. I want to give each and every student support. I would also like to coordinate with teachers to make distance learning a better experience for students and staff alike. Please check out my instagram @ana_b861 for more information on my top goals, what I stand for, and my platform!

Vice President

Candice Li

Why are you running for this specific position?

I am running for freshman vice president due to the fact that I feel that I would be able to execute and assist duties of the president.

What previous leadership experience do you have?

I am currently serving as a Media Director on the CASL State Board. (California Association of Student Leaders) I have also been in the WCMS Leadership class for two years, and have also served as a Spirit Commissioner at WCMS for the term of 2019-2020

What are some changes you plan to make or new ideas that you have?

I plan on focusing first on our school’s needs. This includes physiological needs, safety, and the feeling of love and belonging. Physiological needs include basic necessities such as food, water, shelter, PPE, safety needs includes transportation, mental/physical health, love and belonging needs and connections between students and faculty.  Right now, it feels that the school is focusing on many esteem based and self-actualization events, such as school spirit, and awareness issues. While I know that these events are important to forming a school spirit feeling, it is also important to acknowledge that without serving the needs of the students at the lower levels of physiological, safety, love and belonging, school spirit etc, is not possible.

How do you plan on adapting to the restrictions faced with online school in relation to school spirit and events?

While I know that these events are important to forming a school spirit feeling, it is also important to acknowledge that without serving the needs of the students at the lower levels of physiological, safety, love and belonging, school spirit etc, is not possible.

Secretary

Yahli Harel

Why are you running for this specific position?

I am running for Freshman class secretary because I would love to be more involved in the school climate and help make a difference within the school. From past experiences, Student Government is such an amazing opportunity and helps you learn and grow as a person.

What previous leadership experience do you have?

For previous leadership experience, I was in leadership for all the years it was offered at my middle school, Winston Churchill.

What are some changes you plan to make or new ideas that you have?

I just want to work together with the other officers to make everyone feel included and happy during online school. It’s very hard to transition from regular school to online school and I just want everyone to feel heard.

How do you plan on adapting to the restrictions faced with online school in relation to school spirit and events?

I plan on maybe still having spirit weeks where people send it pictures of what they are wearing for school spirit. it will be hard to adapt, but as new ideas come about i am happy to try to make them come to life!

Treasurer

Christopher Keohanam

Why are you running for this specific position?

I’m running for the treasurer position because I’ve always wanted to be involved in some type of leadership since I’ve never had the chance. So I thought that this might just be a good chance for me to do so.

What previous leadership experience do you have?

The only leadership experience I’ve had was being the co-captain of my middle school’s volleyball team.

What are some changes you plan to make or new ideas that you have?

Due to the nature of the position I’m running for, I can’t think of any changes or new ideas at the moment, but I do want to make it clear that I am always open to any suggestions or ideas and I will try and make it my biggest priority to have it discussed with the rest of the class officers.

How do you plan on adapting to the restrictions faced with online school in relation to school spirit and events?

I plan on adapting to the restrictions by hopefully having more online events or activities that students can easily be involved with. And when it becomes safe to do so, have drive by events.

Claire Contreras

Why are you running for this specific position?

I’m running for treasurer because I want to help the class of 2024 build a strong foundation so that we can have awesome events during our four years. Being a teacher’s kid, I have been on campus for events like SAR, athletics and homecoming and look forward to when we can do things like this together again. I know the mira loma community very well and I think this definitely gives me an advantage during distance learning when communication and meeting new people can be tricky.  I’m excited to serve my class and have plenty of fun ideas for events (even through zoom), while still keeping in mind budgets and saving.

What previous leadership experience do you have?

Currently, and for the past four years, I have played competitive water polo and been a team captain. I’ve helped my team medal at junior olympics and earned mvp two years straight. I have also stepped up and become a junior coach for my team which means I get to lead younger athletes (ages 5-8) in drills while still keeping them safe in the water. Aquatics are something I am deeply passionate about, as mentioned before, I have been on campus many times for the past four years, even before being a student, I have helped in many of the fundraising efforts for the MLHS aquatics teams by helping the teams fundraise for senior awards and apparel.

What are some changes you plan to make or new ideas that you have?

The circumstances have definitely changed with distance learning so I hope to incorporate social media platforms to get more community involvement. I also hope to work with my fellow officers to come up with creative ways to host safe socials, especially once we come back, as a way to bring my class closer.

How do you plan on adapting to the restrictions faced with online school in relation to school spirit and events?

Mira Loma school spirit is a big deal, perhaps more so than at any other school. With online school freshman haven’t gotten the chance to feel the full matador experience. Even if virtual, there should be more events where all students can participate such as game and movie nights. I plan to look at what other schools have done successfully and to reach out to you guys for any suggestions on what you might want.

Demiana Tawadrous

Why are you running for this specific position?

I chose this position because I am interested in helping in fundraisers for my class. I am also running for this position because I want to gain experience and meet new people.

What previous leadership experience do you have?

I have been involved in so many different fundraisers at my church. I also helped in fundraisers at my old school. I have experienced many more and these experiences taught me to be responsible, improve my communication skills, team work, etc.. I’ve also been in many translating experiences, helping translate or help with homework.

What are some changes you plan to make or new ideas that you have?

Some important ideas I have is to make Miraloma masks and t-shirts that have a funny picture of the COVID19 so that students when they graduate will remember about it in the future. I think it’s important to make these because they will also help with students’ safety.

How do you plan on adapting to the restrictions faced with online school in relation to school spirit and events?

It’s definitely different and it’s so sad because new freshmans get to miss all the fun things and seniors get to miss prom, trips and graduation parties, But we can still do all the events, spirit weeks, clubs etc.. online. For sure it’s not as fun as going to them but It’s better than nothing. And as for my position I will do the best I can to make things work through the online.

10th grade

President

Janelle Choi

Why are you running for this specific position?

Hello class of ‘23! I am running to be your sophomore class president for three main reasons. I want to boost school spirit in our class, encourage participation in school and class events, and represent any ideas, feedback, or ideas you have. My goal is not to force anyone to participate in activities, but to introduce y’all to different perspectives. I fully believe that participating in school activities is part of the high school experience, and it’s a great opportunity to meet new people as well as have fun with friends you already know. Obviously these events will look different this year, but there is still so much we can do. As participation in events increases, the goal is that school spirit will too. As far as representing your ideas and concerns, there are a lot of changes happening in our school and I will prioritize communicating with you all to hear your opinions on school activities, access to opportunities, and other pertinent issues.

What previous leadership experience do you have?

I have the opportunity to be secretary for a club called Eunoia on campus this year, and I am also the PR officer for the official Eunoia nonprofit. I am in several clubs on campus, have had the chance to serve at my church, and am in the student government class which has taught me valuable leadership skills. Overall, these leadership positions have taught me the importance of being a good communicator, having a clear plan, keeping an open mind, and always prioritizing the voices of the people I serve.

What are some changes you plan to make or new ideas that you have?

Some changes I want to make include planning more activities that will help members of our class get to know each other better. With events like SAR and SCAR, we had the chance to meet students who were not in our classes or programs. In order to achieve this goal, our class can host Kahoot, Among Us, Skribbl.io games and more. We can also hold more spirit weeks, decorating contests, virtual dances and perhaps start some ML TikTok challenges. I also want to give people the opportunity to get offline as I’m sure we’re all pretty tired of staring at screens all day.

Realistically this can be implemented by advocating for hobbies such as painting, reading, writing, working on trick shots in the backyard, baking new treats, and more random activities. Additionally, pushing for a focus on mental health is important especially during these times, and participating in activities that help us unwind may be a good place to start. I also want to push for more competitions between the four classes. This is always a great way to increase school spirit because we refuse to lose! Similar to the SAR point system, we can start a system that rewards classes for participation in events throughout the year.

How do you plan on adapting to the restrictions faced with online school in relation to school spirit and events?

The plans and ideas I mentioned above are all adapted to Covid restrictions, but I do have a couple more ideas I would like to share. One aspect of school many people across the board are struggling with, is building teacher-student relationships. I want to make sure that teachers are included in student led activities and that we have a chance to get to know our teachers better, and vice versa. In terms of school spirit, even if you don’t feel comfortable posting a picture or turning your camera on in class, school spirit is not limited to how much other people see. I encourage you to participate in things like spirit weeks and decorating even if you don’t show it to other people. At the end of the day, it’s about your love for our school and our class, which can be expressed in a lot of different ways. Something I know a lot of people look forward to is school dances. Sophomore year is usually the year we plan the TWIRP dance. For the foreseeable future it doesn’t look like we’ll be able to host a physical event, but I have many ideas for how we could host a virtual TWIRP and make it just as enjoyable. Covid-19 does put a lot of restrictions on what we can do, but I am fully confident in our class’s ability to make the most of the situation and spread school spirit safely.

Vice president

Mariana Yamamoto

Why are you running for this specific position?

I am running to be sophomore Vice President because I feel that I would be a good leader and can contribute a lot to the class of 2023. As Vice President I know that I would be very dedicated, especially towards improving communication, raising our class’s competitive level, and promoting/providing an overall positive sophomore experience. The position of vice president particularly stood out to me as a lot of the job centers around working with others. I know that I would always be there to assist, collaborate, and support fellow officers and our class as a whole because I am a very responsible and reliable person. Aside from me truly believing that I can benefit the class of 2023 as Vice President, I am running also because I genuinely enjoy helping and participating in school events and seeing our class succeed.

What previous leadership experience do you have?

The main leadership experience in my life has been through my soccer team (out of school), of which I have been a part of for over a decade. As a leader on my team I have been able to gain skills that help me settle tension between others, think logically and practically in stressful situations, and create friendly, collaborative atmospheres.

What are some changes you plan to make or new ideas that you have?

This year I hope to not necessarily change, but highly improve the communication system within our class. Last year because we did not have any members from the actual Student Government class and some other issues, there was generally a delay in information getting to students wanting to participate. Luckily this year our class president will receive information directly from their Student Government class. Nonetheless, I think it would be really beneficial for our class to have a more solid communication platform. Most announcements are currently made through our class’s 2023 Instagram account, which is very helpful, but not followed by or accessible to everyone. I think that this year our class should make a point to reach out to certain students through our school emails and possibly Remind. Overall, communication is just one of the main areas I have a lot of ideas for as it ultimately plays a direct role in the participation and unity of our class. I also feel that setting up firm communication bases will continue to benefit our class throughout later years as upperclassmen.

How do you plan on adapting to the restrictions faced with online school in relation to school spirit and events?

In regards to school spirit and events under corona conditions, I hope to help bolster the same kind of excitement and energy we would have during a normal school year in modified/alternative activities. However, when it does come down to it I would not have control of necessarily how our usual school events are changed as that lies in the hands of higher powers and obviously the future course of corona. No matter how school activities are affected, I plan on working to maintain positive school spirit and continued growth of our class as a competitive threat.

Emma Pham

Why are you running for this specific position?

The reason I am running for vice president is that I believe I am capable of helping people make as many memories as possible this year. We only got to experience three-fourths of high school before we entered quarantine. Right now, everyone is stressed and in need of an outlet. I have the organization and communication skills needed in student government, so I can help provide students with a way to relax this year. There are many options, such as  events, discussions, or and more.

What previous leadership experience do you have?

I have leadership experience from both positions I’ve held at school, as well as a few outside in the community as well. I was 2023’s Class Secretary for the 2019-2023 school year. I am also the currently the Secretary of National Honor Society, as well as the Girl Voice Committee, which is associated with Girl Scouts Heart of Central California.

What are some changes you plan to make or new ideas that you have?

Here are some new ideas I have for events! All of which would have to be discussed in more detail with the student government advisor, Mr. Posner, and receive his approval. Some ideas I have are virtual game nights, movie viewings, dress up zoom meetings, and topic discussions.

How do you plan on adapting to the restrictions faced with online school in relation to school spirit and events?

I plan to adapt by replacing traditional, in person, school events with the new ideas mentioned above. They can all be used to increase school spirit! For virtual game nights, we could play Kahoot, among us, and other fun games in breakout rooms or as a collective group. To unite the class as a whole, we could do a bunch of ice breakers and just ask questions to get to know each other. For movie viewings, we would hold a poll to see what movies students would be most interested in seeing. An officer could then screen share it. The idea of dress up zoom meetings may sound odd but since we cannot have traditional dances, we could have themed dress up zoom meetings instead. At said zoom meetings, we could play games, watch movies, or do any other activities that students suggest. Topics discussion can be very broad, and I would like to keep it that way. Students could choose to have a discussion from a variety of subjects including: new games, books, shows, bands, characters/events from movies, etc. We could even discuss relevant topics in the news today. I do want to reiterate, all of this would have to be approved if it is to be a school event. Though, after we receive approval, we could host these events via zoom and make plenty of memories. In conclusion, I want to help the class of 2023 to get to make as many happy memories as safely as possible!

Nevaeh Robinson

Why are you running for this specific position?

I chose to run for the position of vice president because I care about Mira Loma and it’s students. i’m hardworking and passionate about helping others.

What previous leadership experience do you have?

I have never gotten the opportunity to run in a leadership position, but I feel as if mira loma gave me as well as many others the chance and opportunity to participate, and I am grateful. I have worked with a state assembly member and friend in advocacy of a senate bill involving school start times, and overall I care about our experience as students.

What are some changes you plan to make or new ideas that you have?

I want our students to feel safe and comfortable at mira loma, and every voice and suggestion to be heard. an idea i had was to impose a box (for in person) or a certain email address to send their concerns, suggestions, and other inquiries. this way it makes it possible to make mira loma an even better place, together.

How do you plan on adapting to the restrictions faced with online school in relation to school spirit and events?

I think that if we end up doing distance learning for the rest of the year, we could host sports a rama online again, or a variation of it. We could also plan multiple virtual contests or spirit weeks so that matadors can show their spirit while staying safe and healthy!

Secretary

Katie Stuart

Why are you running for this specific position?

I am running for this specific position because I believe it is something I would be very good at. It is crucial to have officials that are enthusiastic about their positions, in order for the council to run smoothly.

What previous leadership experience do you have?

I am a very active member or my Girl Scout Troop, of which I am actually the treasurer. I enjoy being treasurer for my troop, but I chose to run for secretary because I felt like a change would be beneficial. Plus, in a school setting, I think I would be a much better secretary. I am also on a moot court team here at the school, and because I am returning, I’ve gotten the amazing experience of not only recruiting, but teaching and helping new members of this club.

What are some changes you plan to make or new ideas that you have?

Overall, I don’t have many ideas for changes. As far as new ideas go, I think it would be extremely beneficial for student morale to be able to put together some kind of events (distanced or online, depending on whichever option is safest for family and faculty members).

How do you plan on adapting to the restrictions faced with online school in relation to school spirit and events?

I think as previously mentioned, coming up with more ways for students to get involved vio the online platform would really drive school spirit. At this point, I’m not concerned with in person events as it is not safe. The only thing I’m concerned about is the wellbeing of staff and students. It is vital that we do not put any more stress on people, especially as we go into a second lockdown.

Treasurer

Ailsa Peru

Why are you running for this specific position?

I am running to become the Sophomore class treasurer to contribute to the Mira Loma community and be a leader for the 2023 class. I believe I could put my planning and organizational skills to good use. As treasurer, I would manage the finances and creatively contribute ways to fundraise for our class. I want to be an officer because I am a team player and I truly enjoy working with my classmates in a collaborative atmosphere. I love coordinating and planning events. I have strong leadership and money management skills both which will aid me immensely in the position of Treasurer. If elected, I look forward to working to support my classmates and other officers.

What previous leadership experience do you have?

I have held many positions which require lots of leadership skills. In 7th grade, I was the director of our school’s musical, Beauty and the Beast. I learned a lot from this experience and was consistently required to manage a large group of people with diverse needs and interests. I gained numerous management skills and learned to be as prepared as possible. This role was a huge responsibility, and I grew as a leader. I learned how to value the role each individual played in making a successful production. I learned to also inclusively discuss ideas and how to effectively be both decisive yet still find a good compromise between ideas in any situation. While managing the musical, I also dealt with the budget to produce the play. What I learned during budgeting of the Musical will directly support my ability to be a strong Treasurer. I have also had experience as a leader in assisting with PTA fundraising and PTA events at my siblings’.

What are some changes you plan to make or new ideas that you have?

The biggest change I would like to see this year is involvement of more people in class activities and an increase in school spirit in our class. To create this change, I am planning to use as many forms of communication as possible. I would also like to create incentives for people to become more involved. Last year, we also struggled with finances for events and didn’t plan ahead very well. This year, I intend to plan ahead in terms of the use of finances and the organization of events that could happen this year. I would also like to create more opportunities for our class to fundraise for events, better fundraising will allow our class to be better prepared for any event that requires the purchasing of items.

How do you plan on adapting to the restrictions faced with online school in relation to school spirit and events?

To adapt to the restrictions faced by online schooling, I plan to utilize communication platforms available to us as officers, to be as inclusive as possible to the entirety of the Sophomore class for any events taking place. I would like to utilize the class instagram account to its fullest and possibly create a Remind to inform people of new events and spirit weeks. I also intend on, as Treasurer, finding ways to fundraise online as necessary for any events. Fundraising is very important to achieve our fullest potential as a class, and though the format will differ from a normal school year, I believe we can still achieve our goals digitally. In terms of class meetings which may occur as is required, I will strive to encourage everyone to attend and will encourage the use of Zoom to ensure the safety of all my peers.

11th grade

President

David Martinez

Why are you running for this specific position?

This year I’ve decided to run for class president. As a middle schooler I had a front row seat to all the ongoings at Mira Loma. thanks to my sisters relentless involvement, school spirit, and leadership skills I was able to get a taste of what’s to come in my freshmen year. When It came to my Sophomore year I finally mustered up the courage to run for class president, and it felt great. In summary, getting early exposure to Mira Loma helped me decide what Position I wanted to run for and why.

What previous leadership experience do you have?

Last year I held a class office position that mainly  included two tasks. My office position had me in charge of our classes fundraisers along with attending a meeting or two for the executive board. Though not required I volunteered to provide  the resources and event space needed to run events such as our annual float building contest, along with our SAR deco nights.

What are some changes you plan to make or new ideas that you have?

With COVID being a big party killer I plan to offer and provide ways to keep that party alive. With all our peers now having access to the internet I hope to use applications such as zoom, discord and social media in general to bring our class together. Socialization is key when it comes to rough times, what better way then to start with your class.

How do you plan on adapting to the restrictions faced with online school in relation to school spirit and events?

I plan on using the resources we have   and move forward. I’ve seen people dwell on the fact that we’re expected to not have the same traditional activities we have each year, and as said as that is we need to put that in the past and move on. As a school we need a back up plan or at least something in the works to contemplate these issues. School  spirit seems bleak because we’re not around to see it in person. events like spirit week are a great start and I hope more events like this are seen in Mira Lomas near future.

Vice president

Toby Gaudreau

Why are you running for this specific position?

I have been a class officer before and through that experience and others, I love helping lead our class and have many ideas that will progress our class to do better.

For previous leadership experience, I am in my second year in the student government class and have been class president.

What previous leadership experience do you have?

Fundraisers are a priority to me. As juniors, we need to start raising more money for graduation and other important events and that starts with prioritizing money and raising it effectively and I will be pushing to do that as much as we can.

What are some changes you plan to make or new ideas that you have? And, How do you plan on adapting to the restrictions faced with online school in relation to school spirit and events?

School spirit is an absolute priority to me and with online school it has been a challenge but I have taken lead already in some of the competitions related to halloween last month as well as helping plan a virtual esports tournament. Bringing spirit to the homes of matadors, while challenging is possible and has already been done to an extent. I plan to continue this by bringing even more ideas to how we can create new events as well as adapting favorites of many students as best as we can.

Secretary

Maisha Sinha

Why are you running for this specific position?

I am running for class secretary because I wanted the opportunity to help my classmates especially during Covid. It has become difficult for students to have their voice heard and that sense of school spirit has sort of ebbed away. I want to help join us together as a class again and as a school again so that even in these difficult times there is a boost in morale and something for people to look forward to.

What previous leadership experience do you have?

Previously I have had leadership experience through organizations, clubs, and am looking forward to the learning experience that I can gain from this one….potentially of course.

What are some changes you plan to make or new ideas that you have?

Some changes or plans I have include regenerating that sense of community and school spirit that has mellowed out since we are all stuck at home. Nothing final yet, but I would love to bring that up and maybe set up some sort of event, especially if covid continues into next semester it would be great for school spirit.

How do you plan on adapting to the restrictions faced with online school in relation to school spirit and events?

Online school is indeed different, but it comes with its own set of rules. There are pros and cons to it just as there were to actually going to school. Instead of trying to figure out grand activities with multiple people as we did in the past with Rallies, Pie Day, etc we have to do things on a more individual note and much smaller. Plus it will take a greater effort to get people interested and actually engaged. All in all it will be more individual in terms of events and school spirit. Hopefully however, people will still be interested and want to show spirit.

Jesse Cowan

Why are you running for this specific position?

I am running for the position of class secretary. I’ve known that I’ve wanted to be a class officer junior year since the beginning of my sophomore year when I started to get more involved with activities like deco. Since this year would be my first involved in student government and being an officer, I did not wish to play a role as large as class president or vp, especially considering that I have classmates more suited for that role. I have decent communication skills which is important for my position to have. I also did not have much interest in being class treasurer so naturally class secretary would be the position I chose as I was already set on being an officer.

What previous leadership experience do you have?

This would be my first time running for a class officer position, however that does not mean I am under qualified. I am currently enrolled in the Student Government class and will likely choose to take it my senior year as well. Last year, I also helped with deco for homecoming and SAR, and even sold hot chocolate during the fall fest event to support my class. In addition to that, I work great in groups and would be happy to fulfill my duties as class secretary no matter who my fellow officers are.

What are some changes you plan to make or new ideas that you have?

I’m going to try to bring more positivity, especially considering how tough it is for some people in distance learning. I’m currently thinking of an idea to spread cheer in December which will hopefully brighten people’s day.

How do you plan on adapting to the restrictions faced with online school in relation to school spirit and events?

As of right now the focus is to try to spread positivity and school spirit. With distance learning it’s a little harder but in general we are trying to come up with virtual events and other stuff that will hopefully cheer some people up. Previously I have helped set up the costume contest that was held in October and we hope to have more virtual events in the future.

Treasurer

Isabella Carrasco

Why are you running for this specific position?

The reason I’m running for class treasurer is because I have several ideas for fundraisers that I would love to do. I also enjoy being organized and keeping track of my documents and schoolwork so I feel those skills would translate well to being class treasurer.

What previous leadership experience do you have?

As of right now I am the secretary for our school’s Academic Decathlon and I helped organize club rush about two months ago. I also ran for ASB Treasurer about a month ago however I lost aht election. These jobs have helped me develop the skills I need to be a good leader so I can work with my fellow officers while listening to my other classmates that would like to help out with school events.

What are some changes you plan to make or new ideas that you have?

Something I want to focus on is having lots of fundraisers. This ranges from selling cookie dough, doing a car wash, selling homemade masks, and more. Since my class is in our final two years of high school I want to be able to make them count. Although it is unclear when the pandemic will end it still wouldn’t hurt to gather funds in hopes of having the best prom, senior ball, and graduation that we could possibly have.

How do you plan on adapting to the restrictions faced with online school in relation to school spirit and events?

As previously stated, we’re still unsure when the pandemic will end. Until then we need plans to turn some if not most of our events into online events. Our best bet is to have online social gatherings through Zoom but it would also be a good idea to invest in getting the licenses of other platforms that would be beneficial to this. But most importantly, we need to keep our student body’s morale high. We have to encourage each other to participate in online events and check in on each other if we’re ok. As long as we’re having fun, it’ll all be worth it.

12th grade

President

Dina Aljibori

Why are you running for this specific position?

My main motive for running for president is that I would love the opportunity to serve our school. I would love to bring my experience to my fellow matadors to help everyone thrive both in and out of school. Through participating in activities put on by the school, it has really allowed me to find myself and I would like to use my platform to encourage my fellow students to pursue the things they love doing so they can also find who they are.

What previous leadership experience do you have?

I have 3 terms of Student Government under my belt so I am aware of what it takes. I have been an officer since freshman year beginning as freshman class treasurer and then proceeded to be sophomore Vice President and Junior class president.

What are some changes you plan to make or new ideas that you have?

If elected, I will work to make 2020-2021 an amazing year for all students at MLHS! I will work with the other officers to promote a positive environment where students can learn and grow. I will work collaboratively to organize amazing events for the whole school to enjoy, and promote unity within our student body. I will build upon the rich history and culture that makes Mira Loma High School the best!

How do you plan on adapting to the restrictions faced with online school in relation to school spirit and events?

Due to the restrictions brought on by covid, we are unable as a school to have the normal events that would elevate the school spirit. To work through this, all events can be made online whether to be on zoom or on social media. It’s important that we are spirited for our last year at Mira Loma high school.

Tara Gokul

Why are you running for this specific position?

I’m running for class president because last year when I was an officer I learned the ins and outs of how school spirit and all of our class activities of work and now that I’m in the student government class I feel like I am the person who is creative and hardworking to create a great year for our class.

What previous leadership experience do you have?

My previous leadership experience was being class secretary last year, I found that me and Harrison the treasurer worked really well together and we planned lots of fundraisers for prom and did a lot of good work together preparing for SAR. For example we were in charge of tasks like dismantling the homecoming float and helping plan SAR statue

What are some changes you plan to make or new ideas that you have?

I plan to make every effort to make the year enjoyable with online events to keep the spirit going. Some ideas are a virtual senior trip and movie Nights. When we get back I also want to ensure that we all have a memorable graduation  so that means a community celebration depending on the restrictions such as a drive-by, posters for grads and other exciting ways to celebrate.

How do you plan on adapting to the restrictions faced with online school in relation to school spirit and events?

When it comes to restrictions it’s better off to follow them rather than trying to get around them, that way people will be safer. So far, Student Government has been making many efforts to create online school events already, hopefully some people have attended online game nights and movie Nights. For the senior class specifically I want to make sure that our graduation is actually meaningful and we get to say goodbye to each other in a safe way, as well as keeping our school Spirit Alive as a community rather than just an academic place once we go back to school. I think continuing with online events as well as creating more support for students will be the best way to continue fostering our school spirit.

Yassin Zuhair

Why are you running for this specific position?

I am running for Class President because I want our senior class to still have a good and fun year even with all the restrictions we have had due to COVID-19. I want to represent the class of 2021!

What previous leadership experience do you have?

I’ve never really ran for anything since this is only my second year at Mira loma but I’ve had a lot of leadership experience with sports teams.

What are some changes you plan to make or new ideas that you have?

I have a couple ideas if we do come back to campus. Right now I want to start fundraising for different types of organizations.

How do you plan on adapting to the restrictions faced with online school in relation to school spirit and events?

I’ve always loved school spirit. It’s going to be difficult to have events again but we can always do events through zoom. Or we can socially distance outside. I want to get a lot of people into school spirit even if we haven’t been on campus

Vice President

Harrison Stamper

Why are you running for this specific position?

I’m running for senior class vice president solely because I feel a strong attachment to my class above all else. I always have been and always will be committed to serving the entire Mira Loma student body, but it’s 2021 that’s been with me all these years. To put it simply, I want to be there to support the president and do what I can to make their job easier, which benefits our class as a whole.

What previous leadership experience do you have?

The first and most significant leadership experience that comes to mind is my time serving as junior class treasurer last year. There was definitely a transitional period for me while I was getting into the flow of accepting my responsibilities as an officer. Now that I’ve got a whole year (and three months!) of direct student government work under my belt, I feel much more confident in my ability to take our class in a positive direction.

What are some changes you plan to make or new ideas that you have

First and foremost, regardless of how different this year is, it’s my goal to make the 2020-2021 school year really feel like senior year. With that in mind, I’d like to do our typical school events like homecoming and SAR proper justice to whatever extent we can go to because, hey, we deserve it. I’ll do my best to reinvigorate the spirited culture we all know and love at Mira Loma and, if at least someone shouts ‘21 chants with me online, I can rest easy. And, of course, look forward to 2021 gear!

How do you plan on adapting to the restrictions faced with online school in relation to school spirit and events?

From whatever medium we end up finishing our year with, there’s always ways to keep spirit alive. I’d love to engage with the class as a whole with regular meetings and discussions, not only to keep everyone in the loop with our class activities, but also to remind ourselves of the friends we’re missing from home. It’s likely that not everyone is super comfortable with or into interacting over Zoom and that’s okay. As class officers, it’s our job to either encourage more participation or find more engaging and entertaining ways to stay in touch and make it feel just a bit more like normal.

Secretary

Maria Tawadrous

Why are you running for this specific position?

I want to be a Senior Class Secretary because I want to help the senior class have as much fun as possible. Students should still be able to make happy memories in high school, despite the pandemic. Also, I want to increase student involvement (especially now) and make sure every student population is heard. Create a positive atmosphere to have students feel wanted and accepted which is critical to their success. Plus making sure students have the best high school experience.

What previous leadership experience do you have?

The most valuable leadership experience I have been involved in is the student leadership council for the San Juan School District. As treasurer of the council, my main role and responsibility were to report how much money we have and make recommendations on ways we can budget or save. I also had to work with my team and find new methods to welcome newcomers. We focused a lot on creating new programs and activities for English learners. This experience has been an excellent one as it has taught me to be responsible, communicate better, teamwork, learn about new cultures and languages, and most importantly, how to be a good helper and friend. Another valuable leadership experience that I have been involved in is student government. My main role in student government was publicity. I also was in charge of the ELD students, making sure their English teachers were aware of the activities and upcoming events that the Student Government would be putting on. I would always be the touchpoint for the students or the  ELD teachers for more clarification. This has made me get to know teachers and students on a different level.

What are some changes you plan to make or new ideas that you have?

Some new ideas that I have may include, school-wide t-shirts for staff on the first day with names on the back. Welcome posters all around the school when we come back. Spirit day; face painting with school spirit logos at lunch. Bring mascot out at lunch. Buy things for school spirit and hand out for free. Dress up days; one could be around the world (ask students why they are not participating in dress-up days. Then take that info back to the team. Make sure everyone knows about the spirit days. Senior parking spots painted. Teachers could decorate their doors. My main goal is to have a wonderful year no matter what format we are in and always make the school a better place for everyone. And I would always be ready to help anyone.

How do you plan on adapting to the restrictions faced with online school in relation to school spirit and events?

It is absolutely different and kind of difficult at the same time, but in student government, we are making a lot of effort to continue bringing school spirit and fun events for everyone for sure promise to do my best to make this year memorable and amazing. I am glad that we can still do activities, spirit weeks, clubs over zoom.

Treasurer

Jessica Gouvea

Why are you running for this specific position?

In the back of my mind I’ve always thought about being an officer. To why I picked to run specifically for treasurer, I’m not sure. I think I would be fine with any position, as long as I get to help my class.

What previous leadership experience do you have?

I haven’t had much experience on my own as a leader, but I’ve found myself working with teams in the past. Currently I’m the head of the publicity team for our school’s play. In the past I’ve volunteered at the library where I would help other volunteers plan and manage events.

What are some changes you plan to make or new ideas that you have?

If I’m honest I’m not really sure. I’m still thinking about it, but I’m going to find ways to make the class feel more engaged in our fundraisers

How do you plan on adapting to the restrictions faced with online school in relation to school spirit and events?

With these restrictions, it does seem very difficult. There’s many events we won’t be able to do and many we already missed out on. However, I’m sure that we’ll be able to find a way to look past this. I’ll do my best to think of ways we might be able to possibly modify some of the events to fit the guidelines in place. I’ll make sure to still show spirit and I hope it will encourage my other classmates to as well
