With the covid outbreak, the San Juan and Twin Rivers Unified School Districts have implemented a new mental health service in partnership with Elica Health Center. This service will be open to all students and their families. All ages are welcomed, and no appointments will be needed. Also, translation services will be available, although information about the languages available for translation has not been released.
This service provides mental and physical check-ups, dental services, free flu shots, as well as vaccinations. Costs will be low cost or waived, depending on financial capabilities. The program will check if any participating students are at risk for any physical or mental health issues, including COVID-19. This will take place from October 2 to October 30.
The San Juan and Twin Rivers School Districts have also cooperated with Elica to create a mobile clinic, called health on wheels. The San Juan Unified School District will separate the times at which certain students can access the clinic. First, Howe Elementary School will have a slot on Mondays from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. Encina High School will be next, on Wednesdays, at the same time of day. The visit time for Mira Loma is yet to be announced, but it is stated that students at each school will get individualized information about how it is managing the service. Twin rivers will also join the service, with Madison Elementary going first on Thursday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. FC Joyce Elementary is next on Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
However, students must be sure to follow certain requirements if they are interested in joining this service. These include an immunization record (could be printed out), a health card or social security number. Also, Parents and or guardians must be present with an ID and guardianship affidavit. Regarding eligible Health insurance, all plans are accepted, including MediCal and Medicare.
District officials and health experts hope to see a boost in mental health coming from these programs, especially due to the toll that at-home school has had on many students.
